Despite these challenges, Albizu Campos’ brilliance earned him a scholarship to the University of Vermont, where he later made history as the first Puerto Rican Harvard graduate.
Albizu Campos’ service in a segregated military unit during World War I exposed him to racism, fueling his negative perception of the United States. Despite excelling at Harvard Law School, racial prejudice delayed his graduation. Fluent in six languages, he rejected prestigious offers to return to Puerto Rico in 1921, dedicating himself to the cause of independence.

Utilizing his legal acumen, Albizu Campos created bonds for Puerto Rican independence, drawing attention to the cause. In 1936, Albizu Campos was arrested for conspiracy against the U.S. government, marking the beginning of 25 years of imprisonment.
